Stocking for the school season: a four-week plan

The school season is won in the four weeks before it starts, not on price during it. Here is how to plan the stock.
School demand arrives in a compressed window and collapses just as fast. The shops that do well are the ones already carrying depth when the first parent walks in — which means ordering before the rush rather than during it.
Four to six weeks ahead
That is the honest window for imported stock. It is real, finite stock sitting in a warehouse, and the best-selling designs commit first. If you call us the week your local session starts, we will tell you what is left; if you call six weeks ahead, you get to choose.
What actually sells into a school season
Pencil boxes are the anchor. They are the item the child chooses themselves, and the parent rarely overrules. Two-layer boxes, calculator styles and LCD drawing boxes all pull well because they do something rather than just hold something.
Around that anchor:
- Mechanical pencils and lead boxes — repeat purchases through the year, not just at session start.
- Erasers and sharpeners — low ticket, high frequency, and the easiest impulse add-on at the till.
- Multi-colour and character pens — the item a child shows their friends.
- Complete sets — the ready-made gift for a new session, and the single easiest way to lift an average bill without needing one extra customer.
Plan the bill, not just the shelf
A useful exercise before you order: write down what you want a typical school-season sale to look like. If today it is one pencil box, aim for one pencil box, an eraser and a set of pens. Then stock so that combination is physically possible and visible in one place.
Sets deserve particular attention here. They do not need any extra footfall to work — they raise the value of the customers already walking in.
If you supply schools on a list
Order in cases against the list, and send us your delivery city early. Freight on a large school order is worth planning rather than discovering at the end. We confirm the freight to your city before you pay anything, so the landed cost is never a surprise.
The mistake to avoid
Do not spread the budget thinly across twenty designs so the shelf has variety. In this category, variety without depth reads as leftovers. Three designs shown properly will outsell ten shown two pieces at a time — every season, in every market.
